When a concern arises about the privacy of a business conversation, the first step is to assess the concern and the setting. ASE considers enquiries about bug sweeping, also known as debugging, for agreed business premises.
What does bug sweeping mean?
In this context, it means looking for indications of unauthorised listening or transmitting devices within an agreed inspection scope. It is about investigating possible monitoring, not intercepting someone else's communications.
Start by defining the requirement
We discuss the premises, the reason for the enquiry and the authority to commission an inspection. We then confirm whether appropriate support is available, what can be included and what falls outside the proposed work.
Does an inspection guarantee continuing privacy?
No. Findings relate to the agreed inspection, the access available and the time of the work. They should not be presented as a continuing guarantee that a location cannot be monitored.
Does this include cybersecurity or device forensics?
Those are separate requirements and are not included by this page. Any need involving networks, software, personal devices or specialist forensic examination must be discussed separately before a scope is agreed.
